The New Warhol
December 27th, 2007, JRoyLet’s get to it mates. Every so often, an artist comes along and is able to change the way we think about art. Salvidor Dali, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol, just to name a few, have all influenced art and the way art is defined.Who is today’s big name?
Well, it’s Banksy of course. By no means traditional, he is an artist that tries to define TODAY’S age and culture. He does things that no one has done before and is changing and challenging the way that we examine what actually counts as art and what doesn’t, all while remaining completely anonymous.
He was born in England in 1974 and that’s pretty much all anyone really knows about the fellow. His works, which typically consist of satirical and sometimes offensive portrayls, on the realms of politics, culture, ethics, and world issues can be found in London to Israel and everywhere in between.
Spray paint and stencils are his brush and anything and everything is his canvas.
*At a London Zoo, he climbed into the penguin enclosure and painted “We’re bored of fish” in seven foot high letters.
* In August 2005, Banksy painted nine images on the Israeli West Bank Border, including an image of a ladder going up and over the wall and an image of children digging a hole through the wall.
*Banksy has sprayed “This is not a photo opportunity” on certain photograph spots.* This is a real elephant.
*And other fun stuff one, two, three.
And that’s just the beginning. He isn’t just a street graffiti artist considering that his works have sold for thousands of dollars to celebrities such as Brad Pitt and Christina Aguilera. And He’s published 4 books.
